In early 2025, John Ryan lost most of his eyesight. First the right eye went completely. Then the left eye diminished to roughly 40%, the world reduced to shadows and silhouettes. The culprit was Pseudoxanthoma Elasticum — a rare genetic condition that had ruptured the blood vessels of his retinas.
In losing his physical sight, something else came into sharp focus. Twenty years of patterns in the insurance industry — systemic claims suppression, a generation of master adjusters walking out the door, AI being built on corrupted data — assembled into a single coherent picture. The same technology John had learned to rely on personally — AI as a human-in-the-loop augmentation, not a replacement — was the exact model the industry needed.
In January 2026 John returned to the work with three fixed convictions. First: start building — faith without action is just sentiment. Second: be surrounded by someone who believed.
